French Oldschool rules

We don't just play the Ancient format, we also play 93/94. We use the French rules for these events. The French rules were updated in 2018 for the French Eternal weekend, we use the 2018 version of the rules.

General rules of the French "Old School" format

Authorized editions
The format only authorizes the cream of the crop of the Magic editions.
    Alpha
    Beta
    Arabian Nights
    Antiquities
    Legends
    The Dark
    Fallen Empires

The spirit of the format would require that cards are only allowed in the English original edition but most Tournament Organizers allows any language and several reprints to open and enlarge their tournaments' player base.To know which languages and reprints are authorized, please read further.

Important Note
In the Swedish rules (which acts as the world’s reference), Fallen Empires is not a legal expansion.

Fallen Empires has been added after a lot of players test, mostly to grant players access to Hymn to Tourach and Order of the Ebon Hand, as they allow black-based decks to be able to compete with the blue-based decks, like "The Deck".

Format rules
The current Magic: The Gathering rules are in use, with the following exceptions:
1. Rule of the Paris mulligan: similar to the current mulligan, but without the Scry 1. There is no free mulligan if you have 0 or 7 lands.
2. Mana burn still applies: if you are left with unspent mana by the end of any phase, you lose them and you lose that many life.
3. A player loses the game when their life total is 0 by the end of any phase. This state-based action is the last thing to occur before beginning the next phase.
For exemple: a player can drop to 0 life during their upkeep and then swap their life points with Mirror Universe.

4. Tapped blocking creatures don't deal combat damage.
For exemple: When a player animates Mishra's Factory, uses it to block and then activates its ability.

5. Tapped artifacts : if an artifact becomes tapped, its continuous effects stop until it is untapped.
For exemple:
• If Winter Orb is tapped during a player's untap step, it has no effect and all of that player's permanents untap, including Winter Orb

• If Howling Mine is tapped during a player's draw step, it has no effect and no additional card is drawn
• Even if Forcefield is tapped, its ability can be activated, it is not a continuous effect
• If Dingus Egg is tapped, whenever a land should be put in it's owner's graveyard, Dingus Egg still deals 2 damage to this land's owner as it is a triggered ability and not a continuous effect

Precisions
The original “Ante” Rule is strictly forbidden as it falls under Wagering under the Magic Infraction and Procedure Guide, for which the penalty is a disqualification.
There is no difference between "Interrupts" and "Instants". All "Interrupts" are considered as "Instants".

Card texts
Cards have their current Oracle text, as found on http://gatherer.wizards.com/ with the following exceptions :

Chaos Orb
Card text
1, Tap: Choose a non-token permanent on the battlefield. If Chaos Orb is on the battlefield, flip Chaos Orb onto the battlefield from a height of at least one foot (30cm). If Chaos Orb turns over completely at least once during the flip, and touches the chosen permanent, destroy that permanent. Then destroy Chaos Orb.
"touches the chosen permanent" indicates that Chaos Orb must touch the permanent "after landing and not moving anymore"
Touching the card while bouncing on it is not sufficient.
Sleeves counts as parts of the cards.
If for any reason, Chaos Orb is over the permanent (vertically), but without touching it, after stabilisation, the action will be considered as successful.
(For exemple a difference of level due to a playmat).

Precisions
You can only flip Chaos Orb if it is on the battlefield when its ability resolves. If Boomerang is cast on the Orb in response, it will have no effect.
If you lose, Chaos Orb is nevertheless destroyed.
Chaos Orb doesn’t target.
After multiples text tests, the "Swedish" version still the closest from the spirit of the card and with the most balanced power.

Falling Star

Card text
Choose up to two different creatures.
For each chosen creature, flip Falling Star onto the battlefield from a height of at least one foot. If Falling Star turns over completely at least once during the flip, and touches the chosen creature, Falling Star deals 3 damages to this creature.
Tap each creature that has been dealt damage this way.
"touches the chosen creature" indicates that Falling Star must touch the permanent "after landing and not moving anymore"
Touching the card while bouncing on it is not sufficient.
Sleeves counts as parts of the cards.
If for any reason, Falling Star is over the permanent (vertically), but without touching it, after stabilisation, the action will be considered as successful.
(For exemple a difference of level due to a playmat).

Precisions
If you choose two creatures, you have to do a flip for each of them separately.
If a win a flip, but the creature doesn't receive damage, protected by a "Healing Salve" for example, this creature will not be tapped.
Falling Star doesn’t target.
